Newport Workshops Open Day
2016Photos from the 2016 Newport Workshops open day. This year we see:
Z526 (aka "Polly", formerly "Steam Crane No 3") from Scienceworks, with the Veteran Car Set from the VGR. Polly was the first loco to be built at Newport; Y419 (aka Y112); Rs 707, 761 and 711; Ks 190 (repainted in the weeks leading up) and 160 (heavy overhaul); J541 under overhaul for the YVR; A2 986 in her first public appearance after painting; A brief cameo from D3 639
Diesels: 707 Ops newly repainted F208 and W244, partly repainted after the second Newport fire; DERMs 58 and 56 (overhaul); and Steamrail's S313, M232 (231 with 232s plates. 232 was the last loco built at Newport), Ts 364 and 356, and various stored Ys. Electrics: Hitachi set 281+282M, and 295+296M, and Tait 381M.
2014Every two years Steamrail, DERMPAV and 707 Operations hold an open day to showcase their collections to the public. We see R707, R711, R761, Y112 and D3 639 moving around the yard, with A2 986 stationary under restoration, Ks 153 and 190 (burst a steam pipe early in the day), 58RM, M231, F317 (imported BR Class 11) and W241 the shunters, and L1162 awaiting return to running. Inside, J541 undergoing restoration for the Yarra Valley Railway beside R700, 107M and companions, and T413.
Tragically, 107M, 24D, 137M and 12AT were destroyed in a fire at the workshops on the 3rd of March 2015. This came only a couple of months before 107M and 137M were due to run again after 34 years of restoration.
